Sisters in Crime SA “Inheritance of Secrets and Deadly Secrets” – Meet the Authors

January 24, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

$10 – $15

Sisters in Crime SA next gathering will be a networking event and an opportunity to hear from recently published authors. Sisters of Crime SA convenor Dr Samantha Battams will interview Sonya Bates, author of Inheritance of Secrets (Harper Collins) and  H.R. (Helmine) Kemp, author of Deadly Secrets (self-published). Come along and meet fellow authors and hear about two interesting tales that were published last year and the writing process.

Inheritance of Secrets, Sonya’a debut novel, concerns a brutal murder, a wartime promise and a quest for the truth. It starts when Juliet’s elderly grandparents are killed in their Adelaide home. Who would commit such a heinous crime – and why? The only clue is her grandfather Karl’s missing signet ring…

Sonya Bates  is a writer of adult and children’s fiction. She was shortlisted for the inaugural Banjo Prize in 2018 for the unpublished manuscript for Inheritance of Secrets, and her middle grade novel, Oh Brother, was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award in 2020. Several of her other children’s books have been commended by CCBC Best Books, Resource Links, and the Junior Library Guild in the USA. Born in Iowa City, Sonya worked in paediatric speech pathology for 25 years, first in rural British Columbia, and then in Adelaide. She currently works as a casual academic in clinical education.

Deadly Secrets, also  a debut novel, is an Australian political conspiracy mystery/thriller. Can ordinary people thwart a powerful conspiracy? Shelley Ormond’s life is about to change forever. Her friend, a young refugee, dies suddenly and the Federal Police have shrouded her case in secrecy.

H. R. Kemp is a scientist by training and had a  career in the public servicem spanned roles as diverse as management trainer, team facilitator, statistician and laboratory assistant. Writing waited until she had time, energy and brain-space. In 2011 she got serious and successfully completed a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing at Adelaide University.
